Brian Horsfield, CEO of GEOS4, presented an invited talk on natural hydrogen from sedimentary organic matter at the CSIRO R+ Cutting Edge Science Symposium: "Natural hydrogen: A new sustainable geo-source of energy for Australia?" (November 29-30, 2023) in Fremantle, Australia. Kinetics, mass balance, basin modelling and fluid inclusions were addressed.
It could be concluded that organic H2 is a serious contender as a viable new energy resource, though preservation and storage are the key risks. It is clearly a bonus that the geological, geochemical and geophysical data gathered since the dawn of the petroleum industry, are at our disposal to assist in establishing exploration concepts and protocols.
