Novel Insights from Polar Compounds Geochemistry

Nick Mahlstedt, GEOS4´s Senior Technical Officer, talked about "Impact of Expulsion and Production Fractionation on Petroleum Composition: Novel Insights from Polar Compounds Geochemistry" at the 31st International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG), September 2023, Montpellier, France.

High resolution mass spectrometric analysis (FT-ICR MS) in both ESI (-) and APPI (+) modes was employed to gain insights into the impact of fractionation on liquid composition during petroleum expulsion and production. 45 mid- to late oil window mature fluids from 6 major unconventional resource plays in the US were analyzed. This study reveals that polarity and aromaticity play a more important role in compositional fractionation than does molecular weight during migration and production, at least in the heavy ends of medium gravity petroleum liquids, directly impacting production efficacies.
